Not all news has bad outcomes…
My Story
I haven’t a clue where I’d be if I weren’t colorblind, but I’m glad that I am. Failing a vision test was the best thing that could have happened to me!
It’s true! If you had asked me about my career prospects when I was a teenager, I’d have told you with confidence that I’d become a firefighter or police officer. All that changed just before high school graduation, when a routine vision test informed me – much to my surprise – that I was colorblind. A career as a firefighter or police officer was officially out of the question.
At a loss for what to do with my life, I flew to the sleepy Kenyan city of Kisumu just a few days after my eighteenth birthday. My motivation was simply to explore and have fun while I reassessed my life plans. Lucky for me, the four month trip offered more than I was expecting – it changed my life as I knew it. I began to see the world as ripe with opportunity for those willing to step outside of their comfort zone and take some risks. The experience became the launching point for my life as an international adventurer and social entrepreneur.
After I returned from Kenya I hit the ground running. Along with new opportunities, I began to see my own potential to break ground. Things that once seemed crazy or outside the realm of possibility, were now challenges that I was ready to take head on.
In the years that followed, I never stopped diving into life’s deep end. At 21, I put my entrepreneurial skills to the test by co-founding an award-winning backpackers hostel in Kenya. Two years later I co-founded a second award-winning
hostel in a nearby beach town. By 26 I’d completed my L.L.B. (law degree) and Masters of International Law and International Relations. When 27 rolled around, I was beginning to try my hand at engagement with the DPRK (North Korea).
My full-send attitude was never limited to the professional realm either, I’ve always been knee-deep in adventure whenever I had spare time. From helping to set the world record for highest altitude hockey game, to long-haul tuk
tuk journeys and skydiving school, there hasn’t been many dull moments. Nor do I expect many in the future.Over time, I’ve come to realize that the more one accomplishes, the greater their potential to accomplish becomes. I’m immensely
proud of what I’ve achieved thus far, and I’ve got plenty of runway left. I don’t know where it will take me, but it’s going to be a crazy ride.
If you’re in a rut and need a game changer, drop me a line!
